Luke Steele, one half of the Australian electronic duo
Empire of the Sun, wanted to make music that was “something otherworldly and
special.” With Nick Littlemore, he did. Together, they created the band’s 2008
debut album, Walking On a Dream, and the title track reached the top 10
on Australia’s singles chart.
Empire of the Sun’s style is has been described as Ziggy Stardust meets The Chronicles of Narnia, played out in the duo’s own alternate universe. The self-proclaimed superheroes (referring to themselves as Emperor Steele and Lord Littlemore) were also featured on the BBC’s Sound of 2009 list, which showcases artists on the rise. With a flair for dramatics and a sound like Neon Indian’s, expect Empire of the Sun to keep heating up.
